My son loves strawberry ice cream and any fruit ice cream or sorbet. He’s also a big fan of homemade smoothies. So combining the two, I came up with this homemade sorbet recipe. It’s healthier than ice cream, but still sweet and decadent. And I’m happy to report; he loves it!

Sorbet is a lighter, more refreshing dessert when compared to classic ice cream. It’s traditionally used as a palate cleanser and is a great ending to a heavy meal. In Italy, this sorbet course is known as an intermezzo. Traditionally, it’s non-dairy, but for this recipe, I chose to use plain Greek yogurt to give it a more ice cream-like texture and flavor and some added protein.

When I visited my family in Italy, we had lots of homemade Italian dinners and they always served lemon sorbet in between courses and or for dessert. It was perfect because we were so full from the seven-course meal haha! If you ever visit Italy, try their lemon sorbet while lounging on the beach. Sometimes served with a shot of alcohol, either way, it’s a great way to cool off in the summer heat.

The most classic and traditional flavor is lemon, which is my absolute favorite. But I thought it would be a little too tart for my four-year-old so the recipe below is made with strawberries. But any fruit will work with this recipe.

This sorbet recipe is made with only 5 ingredients and without a food processor or an ice cream maker. Simply use your blender and you’ll have minimal cleanup.

Ingredients To Make Homemade Sorbet:

  • Frozen Strawberries: Choose any fruit you want, mango, raspberry, peach, etc.
  • Coconut Sugar: Granulated sugar will also work in this recipe.
  • Vanilla: Really helps any dessert come together, it’s great in this recipe.
  • Greek Yogurt: Use full-fat, plain Greek yogurt to get the best flavor.
  • Ripe Banana: I added a banana since I was making this for my son, but you could leave it out. The ripe banana will make it sweeter and the combination of strawberry and banana is delicious!

Instead, I sat in a parking lot with a coffee and a pastry for an hour.
